I had the pleasure of attending my first powwow August of 2024. I really didn't know what all to expect going into it, but with a little guidance from Tommy Beartrack, a member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribe, we made our way in and observe a beautiful gathering of people. I was amazed at all of the beautiful colors of the traditional regalia that the dancers wore, and was in awe thinking about how much time and pride that went into making it. The singing, dancing and drums were just amazing. There was an honorary lowering of the flag for Mr. Cliff Reeder, USMC with a beautiful remembrance speech from his family. After that was the Grand Entry, when all of the dancers, from the traditional dress to the fancy dress, came in the circle to sing and dance, was just an absolute site to see. You could just feel the pride of the people celebrating. I hope to attend more powwows in the near future and learn more about the gatherings.
